Dar and her band of survivors must flee for their lives after a terrorist blows up the fence protecting their Boston camp. Departing in two eighteen wheelers, the group heads to Washington State to find Dar’s family. A caravan of army troops, led by egomaniacal General Townsend, arrive in Boston to take control of the camp only to find it in ruins. His goal to capture the President of the United States and Annabelle, one of the few ‘ghosts’ in the world who can walk freely among the dead without fear of attack. Hungry and in need of rest after being pursued by Townsend, the survivors take refuge in a walled-in Amish compound. But all is not what it seems there. The compound, which has its own ‘ghost’, is bitterly divided and separated into two camps by a zombie-filled ditch. Dar realizes that if the Amish don’t soon change their traditional ways, they will die at the hands of the dead. Little does anyone know that a militant group of Amish youth has been secretly planning to overthrow their elders and take control. Desperate to capture the survivors, General Townsend has plans on becoming the next President of the U.S. But first he must capture Annabelle and President Roberts so that the transfer of power is constitutional. The only obstacle in his path is the Chinese tank battalion pursuing him and his troops. The Amish feud comes to a head. After an outbreak occurs on the other side of the ditch, Dar and her survivors quickly put up a fence to keep the zombies from entering. They must then set up an ambush and surprise Townsend and his troops. After suffering a humiliating defeat at the hands of the survivors, Townsend manages to escape in his Hummer. He is captured and taken prisoner by the Chinese army. Rather than treating him as a POW, the Chinese view him as their new conquering leader. With winter looming, and no food to sustain his army, he and his Chinese troops return to the Amish camp and settle in for winter until they can resume their search for the survivors. On the advice of Virgil Snow, an MIT professor, the group travels to Gentel Labs in Minnesota where Snow once worked. Run by a brilliant, charismatic biologist named Calloway, the walled-in compound appears impenetrable. But the facility hides a house of horrors. Having lost his humanity during the apocalypse, Calloway has spent years trying to develop a cure for the plague. Chained zombies line every wall of the facility; guinea pigs for his nefarious research. Hybrid zombie children run freely through the facility. After unleashing an experimental virus onto the horde, the severity of the plague goes from bad to worse, and the slow zombies morph into Olympic sprinters. Dar and her group must flee yet again. A Lakota Indian named Tony advises them to head to the Black Hills of South Dakota where a vast series of wind caves might serve to protect them. A mysterious undertone given off by the wind tunnels somehow keeps the horde at bay. Dar experiences a sense of community with the Lakota. It is a return to the days when they lived freely off the land, and Dar settles down to raise her son only to make a startling discovery. Joseph Souza's award-winning short stories have been published in various literary journals throughout the country. Winner of the 2004 Andre Dubus Award for short fiction from the University of Southern Maine, he also received Honorable Mention for the Al Blanchard award in crime fiction. The Living Dead Series fascinated me with its exploration of sciences and different types of spirituality. The parts where the dead would awake before turning into a crazed monster kept this story human. Townsend sure was something else! I liked the 2 star general, that man knew how to continue on.Throughout this series you realize that no matter what happens to people, the intelligent are brave enough to use brute force, science and faith to survive and fight for another day.
I enjoyed this series. It is unique. Lots of fighting, lots of gore... Not that I like gore, but zombies do. It's got one freaky scientist...talk about dealing with the bad because of good... BAD scientist! Icky scientist!
Anyway, I loved the ending! :-D

I didn't really like the beginning of this series. I thought The Reawakening was a weak start, and I am not a fan of zombie stories with supernatural elements. When the dead started talking about an afterlife, I didn't think I was going to make it through another page in the first book. If not for the fact that I already had the sequel in my possession, I don't know if I would have continued with this series.
However, I did find Darpocalypse to be a great improvement over the first book. I was utterly captivated. Instead of slapping readers in the face with an abrupt cliff-hanger, Souza wrote an ending that had me dying to read third.
Unfortunately, I didn't think the third book was as strong as the second installment, but it was still better than the first book. There was just too much repetition followed by sudden jumps in the timeline. The characters would spend pages and pages doing the same thing run from the military, stop to take a break, fight zombies, rinse, repeat...you get the idea. When there was a change in events, there was usually a large leap in time - weeks or even months.
I LOVE the development of the main character, Dar; one of Souza's strong points is the growth of his characters, and the way they interact with one another. The characters are radically different from the first two books - AS THEY SHOULD BE.
I thought this was the last book in a trilogy, but, based on the ending, I wouldn't be surprised if Souza decided to continue the series. There was only one loose end for me General Townsend, but Souza could probably write another two full-length books with the direction that he has taken in this series.
Some authors are better at stand-alone novels, others excel with series. Souza is definitely an author who knows how to write a quality zombie series. I also recommend his latest work, The Liger Plague.
Wow, so this is the end of the series. So many unanswered questions and open stories. I want to know more! But of course this is how all "end of the world" stories end. No happy ending for everyone. But it was a good read and interesting story of how these zombies were created. Now off to my next zombie story (yeah I'm kind of obsessed)
I have read a lot of zombie books but this series has been one of the best best. If you action fast paced zombie action this is the series to read.

This was just as good if not better than the first 2 in this trilogy/series. Loved it! Full of action. Different in a lot of ways than other zombie novels, which I enjoyed. Loved and hated some of the characters, which makes for a great read. Cheering for some to live and some to become zombie food lol Exciting and fun I have thoroughly enjoyed this series so much. 5 stars and A+++ Highly recommend them all!!
Not going to be a classic like Moby Dick, etc., but is a good entertaining read. I chose a 4 star rating because, if you enjoy reading books about zombies, this book will keep your interest without having to try to understand complicated scientific terms. Hoping there’s a 4th book in this series.
General Townsend is aboard a Naval cargo ship en route to Boston where his group of men will attempt to go ashore. He does have some Strykers, cargo and fuel trucks, Humvees and most important, a UH-1 chopper. The General learns from the Captain of this ship that there may be some Chinese in the area getting ready to land.
There is also a group of survivors that have been in the Boston Common. They include Dar, Styx, Virgil, Annabelle, Jamaal and President Roberts. The Gen is hell bent on finding the President for his own personal gain.
I really enjoyed the glimpse into to the Amish way of life. The reader is also exposed to one crazed "Gen" who has gone off the deep end. Toss in Calloway for that added look into the world of a scientist that believes he is able to recreate the undead. Tony is a most welcome addition to the cast...
The ending is superb and is in the Lakota tribe area of the Black Hills in So. Dakota. I believe the identity of the White Buffalo has been revealed!

Note to author Near the end of the book (98% on my device) Sonny and Dar went riding. Then, "Johnny stood with his bow" and "Johnny shot arrow after arrow". Certainly not trying to be critical but felt I should mention it to you. An outstanding read, for sure...
